Joanna Phoenix
I am a qualified specialist teacher, dyslexia/SpLD assessor and experienced educator with over 20 years' experience supporting children, young people and adults with a wide range of learning differences.
I provide Specialist Study Skills Tuition and autism Mentoring, with a particular interest in supporting neurodivergent students, including those with dyslexia, ADHD and autism. I understand that university can bring challenges with organisation, executive functioning, time management, reading, academic writing, managing workload and maintaining confidence.
My approach is warm, supportive and completely individual. I enjoy getting to know how each person thinks and learns, identifying their strengths as well as the areas they find difficult, and working together to develop practical strategies that genuinely work for them. My aim is always to help students become more confident, independent learners rather than simply telling them what to do.
I hold an MA in Specific Learning Difficulties/Dyslexia, a First-Class B.Ed. (Hons) with Qualified Teacher Status, and a current Assessment Practicing Certificate (APC). I am committed to neurodiversity-affirming practice and to creating a relaxed, space where students feel understood, respected and able to be themselves.
I have both professional and lived experience of neurodivergence, which informs my warm, practical and nonjudgemental approach to supporting students.
