Laura Bevis

I began working in Higher Education in 2011 and was awarded the status of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2019. Following postgraduate study and a PGCert in Research Methods, I began lecturing in the University’s English department and later also became an Academic Adviser. I additionally took on a new role, First-Year Tutor, for the Schools of Humanities and the Arts, supporting students with the transition into HE and supporting staff to enhance the student experience. I very much enjoyed this support role which I helped to develop over many years, particularly because I had so much positive staff and student feedback and felt I made a significant difference at individual and course level, and because I was able to work with and learn from tutors and students in many different disciplines. I also led or participated in many teaching and learning research projects from which I and other colleagues learned a lot.
Having worked part-time as a Support Worker, I later joined a University Disability & Dyslexia Service as an Administrator, supporting students with queries and DSA applications, and helping to coordinate support and run events including a Summer School and Early Induction for neurodiverse students.
I have developed my practice with disability-specific training programmes including courses by the National Autistic Society and an NCFE course in Specific Learning Difficulties, supplemented by more general professional development such as coaching and mentoring training, and a SEDA accredited certificate in Leadership. I am now working towards the Level 7 Professional Certificate in Structured Teaching Intervention for Dyslexia and Literacy. Working with students in a variety of different ways has given me a multidimensional insight into the student experience and lifecycle and I’m now able to bring together my learning and experience to deliver Study Skills and Specialist Mentoring.
