Aneliya Vasileva

I have worked as a study skills tutor for the last 10 years, mostly with students from the University of Gloucestershire but also from other universities. Over the years, I have developed my knowledge and skills in providing one to one support for students with SpLD and on the Autistic spectrum through independent research, completing PGCE SpLD AND Mentoring and Coaching and attending numerous trainings and conferences. I also make sure that I always follow ADSHE’s seven principles that underpin Specialist 1:1 Support, which include developing students’ metacognition, motivation and modelling. The areas of support have varied depending on the individual needs of the students but have included mainly research, essay planning and writing, organisation and time management skills, revision and proof reading. I use various multisensory teaching strategies which reflect the students’ needs and preferred learning styles which we identify together I have always aimed to support the students to identify their own strengths and use them to address their weaknesses to become independent learners. I ensure that my teaching is always relevant to the student’s which makes it effective and aids the student’s development. I often model strategies and approaches that students apply to their own learning after adapting them.

Overlearning and ‘little and often’ are important elements of my support as I recognise that SpLD students struggle with memory and are often intimidated by their workload. This allows me to meet the students’ needs to repeat and practise their strategies and to improve their motivation by breaking down their workload to manageable steps.
